Calling talented, non-professional jazz singers to audition for GrandWest’s Open Mic Jazz singing competition

It’s that time of year again when GrandWest opens auditions for the renowned Open Mic Jazz singing competition. All jazz singers, who are not professional singers, are invited to come down to Jackson Hall, GrandWest every Wednesday evening during September 2019 from 20h00 to try out for the competition.

“The competition, now in its 11th year, is a platform for up-and-coming singers to show off their talent to the public,” says Elouise Matthys, the PR and Promotions Manager at GrandWest. “If you are a talented singer but you do not make a living from singing and you have not released an album, you are welcome to audition for this competition. Entries are free and there are some fantastic prizes up for grabs,” she says.

To enter, go to the GrandWest website page, and find the Open Mic Jazz (OMJ) repertoire sheet (www.suninternational.com/open-mic-jazz). Choose a song you would like to sing, then come to the audition, fill in a registration form and you’re ready to go. The competition works on a first-come-first-serve basis and there can be only 30 auditions for each session, so be sure to arrive early. Hopefuls should not leave their audition date too late, as the auditions can get very busy.

This year, the prizes are valued at over R100 000.

“Over the last 11 years there have been some amazingly talented performances at this great competition,” says Matthys. “We encourage anyone who loves to sing jazz, to try out.”
