Imani Imani Makes Her Mark with ‘Papercut’

By: Mwaka Monze

Choosing to debut with a full-length surprise album over a traditional single-filled rollout is no easy feat, yet pgLang‘s newest female signee Imani Imani makes it look effortless on ‘Papercut.’

Released with little more than a handful of mysterious posts from pgLang’s Instagram account and her own social media pages, the album quickly soared to No. 1 on the US iTunes R&B/Soul Albums chart within 24 hours. Imani first entered Kendrick Lamar’s orbit when their unreleased collaboration “I Feel Something” was previewed at Chanel’s Spring-Summer Haute Couture Show in Paris. She built further intrigue through “Snatch,” a snippet that gained a cult following online after premiering during a Chanel Couture show in 2024.

What separates Imani from many of her peers is her voice. Comparisons to Jorja Smith, SZA and Ama make sense, but her tone feels instantly recognisable. Smooth, controlled and expressive, she carries herself with the confidence of an artist who already knows exactly where she fits in the R&B conversation.

‘Papercut’ Breakdown

Bet On Me” opens the album with a polished R&B sound reminiscent of All That Matters by Justin Bieber. “Come Together” follows with bass-heavy synths and infectious production, the type of track that could easily spawn a TikTok dance challenge.

Snatch” was worth the wait. Here, Imani explores ambition and love in the limelight over a moody Sia-esque piano instrumental. She shows off the vocal control that made listeners pay attention in the first place. “On Demand” leans into a groovier, radio-friendly sound that will appeal to fans of Doja Cat. “You’re Mine” feels like it could seamlessly work for the soundtrack of a coming-of-age HBO series. “Mindgames” is a standout track on her project, the minimalistic guitar allows Imani’s vocal runs to take centre stage.

Slideee” brings a bouncy groove and “Chasing” opens with a distorted Frank Ocean-esque vocal before settling into her signature guitar-driven R&B sound. Daan Zinkhaan solidifies himself as Imani’s perfect musical partner in crime on “1 of 1.” Delivering sleek, dark production that blossoms into a drum and synth-heavy earworm. “Let Go (wishes)” sees her getting braggadocious about wanting another woman’s man,. The lyrics are contrasted against serene 90s-inspired production.

The album closes with “My Mistakes.” An intimate piano ballad that sounds like a late-night voice memo. Opting for no vocal effects, the production choice seems very deliberate. ‘Papercut‘ is impressively polished for a debut album. Is Imani Imani here to stay? Only time will tell.
