Having recently returned from a run of sold-out shows in the US, including shows alongside Burna Boy at Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and a standout performance at this year’s Glastonbury festival, Sampa The Great announces ‘Freedom’ the third single taken from her forthcoming debut album “The Return”, out 13th September.
Listen to the official audio below:
The track, which was given a First Play on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show last night follows the singles ‘Final Form’, and ‘OMG’, which were championed by the likes of Zane Lowe & Ebro Darden (Beats 1), Gilles Peterson & Lauren Laverne (6 Music) and Mistajam & DJ Target (Radio 1), and saw an outpouring of support from Pitchfork, FADER, The Guardian, The Observer, NPR, Crack, Vulture, Afropunk, Hypebeast, Dazed and many, many more. Sampa has also found a new fan in Jada Pinkett Smith who described her as her favourite new artist, sharing the video for ‘Final Form’ with her 8+ million followers, and making Sampa the only person she follows in Instagram.
“‘Freedom’ is about one of the most important talks you will ever have as an artist in this industry.” explains Sampa, “The balance of earning a living and expressing your artistry, and what you’re willing to compromise through it all. It’s a blessing being able to create and express yourself through the arts and an even greater blessing when that artistry can provide a livelihood for you, but it’s likely you’ll reach a point in your career where you’ll be given a choice to compromise your artistic expression. How much you’re willing to compromise is a conversation discussed in Freedom.”
On “The Return” Sampa has enlisted a string of esteemed collaborators and peers to create the album. Mixed by Jonwayne (of Stones Throw notoriety), MsM (Skepta/Boy Better Know) and Andrei Eremin (GRAMMY-nominated engineer for Hiatus Kaiyote and Chet Faker), productions are by Silentjay, Slowthai producer Kwes Darko, Clever Austin (Perrin Moss of Hiatus Kiayote), Blue Lab Beats and Syreniscreamy.
The album also features collaborations with Ecca Vandal and London jazz collective Steam Down. She’s performed with Denzel Curry on his breakout track ‘Black Balloons’ for Triple J’s ‘Like A Version’, and toured globally, supporting the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Thundercat, Joey Bada$$, Hiatus Kaiyote, Noname, Ibeyi and Little Simz.
Sampa sets out on tour again this year with 22 shows in October and November throughout Australia, New Zealand and the EU including headline shows in the UK at XOYO (London), Rough Trade (Bristol), YES (Manchester) and Belgrave Music Hall (Leeds).
“The Return” is out on 13th September. ‘Freedom’ is out now, with artwork by Mason London.
