Just a few months after the release of her first Afrikaans single, Hart Op Jou Mou, SUNEL is back with her debut album that promises to sweep fans and music lovers off their feet.
SYMPTOME is a mixture of eleven beautiful tracks, in various musical genres, aimed to appeal to a larger audience. Ten of the songs are fresh original creations from her own pen, some of which were produced in association with Hugo Ludik, Vaughan Gardiner and Darryl De Lange. Her striking rendition of Sonja Herholdt’s Ek Verlang Na Jou is the last song on this captivating new album.
“SYMPTOME is a new word created by me. I wanted a title that Afrikaans and English speaking fans would be able to understand and relate to. Therefore, I decided to combine simptome and symptoms,” explains SUNEL. “I wanted to create a theme that binds the songs on the album together and share a deeper meaning – ‘SYMPTOME’ of love, pain, happiness, being in love, emotions and life itself.”
Although the recording process did not take very long, the artist has been planning and creating the content of this special project for many years and believes that events from her own and other people’s lives were the main inspiration behind each lyric. “Honesty is what makes this album different. Every lyric I wrote comes from my heart. I tell my own story and do not allow anyone else do it for me. I truly believe that this is how it is supposed to be done,” she says. “We are all going through the same things in life and I want my music to send the message that we are never really alone. We are all human and feel and experience the same things.”
According to the singer, it is difficult to choose a favourite song on the album, because they are all very dear to her. “If I had to choose, it would be between ‘Myself In Jou Gevind’ and ‘Airplanes’. ‘Myself In Jou Gevind’ is such a strong song and comes from such a happy place. It’s truly a feel good song and was the last one I wrote for the album. ‘Airplanes’ tells a story of life and the sacrifices that artists sometimes have to make to follow their dreams. It’s a deep and beautiful song.”

Hart Op Jou Mou, the second single taken from her upcoming album, was very well received. It is something that every romantic soul can relate to and is about loving someone so much that they wear your heart on their sleeve in every way possible.
“The song means the world to me. It contains some of the deepest lyrics I have ever written and I am extremely proud of this project. I believe that it will resonate with audiences of all ages. To listen to music that touches your heart and tells a beautiful story, is very important. It is one of those songs that will get stuck in your heart and head, because you will be able to relate to the message,” she reveals about this emotional Afrikaans track.
According to the musician, the production of the song was kept simple because she did not want anything to overshadow the rawness and honesty of the song. The end result speaks directly to the soul and has already impressed listeners and radio stations across the country. The music video can currently be seen on kykNET.
Hart Op Jou Mou is the singer’s second official release. She shot to fame for the instant success of her debut single, Fikcle Heart, which topped SFM’s Top 30 hit parade for nine weeks and remained number one on the charts of HOSA Radio for thirteen weeks. The music video of this hit was produced by SAMA and Ghoema acclaimed music producer, Ryan Kruger from A Ryan Kruger Thing and has had more than 9 000 views on YouTube. “It was an honour to work with Ryan. He is one of the best producers in the business and it was amazing to produce this video with him,” the singer says proudly.
Another one of her singles, also featured on the new album, Hart se Wens is currently number one on SFM’s Top 30 hit parade.
This versatile twenty-five year old Jazz princess from Mossel Bay, with her timeless voice, has been working in the entertainment industry for the past four years. She grew up in a home with music constantly playing in the background and used to take piano lessons, sing in the school choir and take part in plays and other concerts when she was still in school. Since the start of her career, she has already shared the stage with big names, including Chris Chameleon, Elvis Blue, Laurika Rauch, Corlea Botha, Coenie De Villiers, Steve Hofmeyr, Bobby and Karlien van Jaarsveld, to name but a few. Furthermore, she has also had the opportunity to perform at major music festivals like the Dias Festival (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), Naartjie Festival, KKNK (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019), Bravo Festival and the Bushlapa Music Festival. The artist has also done two shows with Pieter Koen and was part of Willem Botha’s kykNET Skole Tour.
When asked where she draws inspiration from to create her heartfelt music, she admits that it mainly stems from everyday life and events. She is also a passionate animal lover, who dreams of owning her own shelter for homeless and abused pets someday. If she had to choose a different career, she would have liked to be a professional makeup artist or psychiatrist because she enjoys listening to people’s problems and giving advice. The artist recently made one of these wishes a reality by completing a makeup course through The Institute Of Makeup Artistry.
Because she is a fan of old school Jazz and Swing music, she relates to artists such as Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Katie Melua and credits them as some of her biggest musical influences. SUNEL also has dreams of working with international acts like Taylor Swift, Michael Buble, Celine Dion and Ryan Tedder in the future. “Ryan Tedder is the lead singer of One Republic and has written many hits for some of the biggest stars in the industry. He is also a brilliant producer and would love to work with someone of his caliber,” she shares.
Over the past few years, SUNEL has come to realise that the music industry is tough, but that you should always believe in yourself and not allow your critics to get you down. She is very excited about sharing her music with the rest of the country and concludes: “SYMPTOME cannot be compartmentalised. It is unique, fresh and a combination of different genres… it is honest and part of who I am.”
SUNEL’s debut album is a gripping combination of heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies and not only complements her unique vocal ability, but also showcases her skill as a songwriter. It is a beautiful piece of work that promises to capture the hearts of music lovers and without which no playlist would be complete.
