It’s been a rollercoaster year for Willim Welsyn. The popular Afrikaans rocker and songwriter recently added ‘award-winning podcaster’ to his rapidly expanding CV, launched the new season of his WAT Podcast, and surprised fans with the release of a brand-new music video on his birthday on the 17th of September.
Here are the crib notes on all the cool stuff that’s been happening.
Herfsheks is the second single from the 2018 South African Music Awards (SAMA) nominated rock album BLITZKRIEK. The energetic performance video for the track was filmed and produced by friend of the band Shaun van Wyngaardt and released on YouTube on Willim’s birthday to the delight of hardcore fans around the globe. He also plans to release another video before the end of the year.
Willim was awarded the AKTV Mediaveertjie Award in the “Luister” radio category for Best Presenter or Interviewer of a Magazine Programme for his WAT met Willim Welsyn podcast on the 11th of May. This made him the first independent, self-funded South African podcaster to win an award in this category that is traditionally ruled by personalities from terrestrial radio stations.
He was also nominated as Favourite Male Artist at the Ghoema Music Awards – the same awards at which BLITZKRIEK was nominated for Best Rock Album. BLITZKRIEK was subsequently also nominated as Best Rock Album at the SAMAs. Willim’s never been about that #AwardLife, but it’s nice when hard work is recognised, so the hardware (and handy excuse to suit up) was accepted with thanks.
The WAT Podcast (it’s baaaaaack!)
On the 2nd of March 2018 Willim posted the 150th episode of the WAT Podcast and announced that he would be taking a hiatus for a few months. He returned to the digital airwaves on the 6th of September with an episode featuring Wynand Myburgh from Fokofpolisiekar, followed by a second episode featuring Laudo Liebenberg, lead singer and guitarist for aKING. And that’s just the start of it
