Five local charities benefit from 1,749-kilometre charity cycle tour

The intrepid cyclists taking part in the 2019 Sun City to The Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour whizzed into Cape Town on Thursday, 7 March 2019, concluding their 1,749-kilometre ride from Sun City in the North West province at The Table Bay hotel at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Their journey began a week before on 28 February 2019. Along the way the cyclists stopped in Klerksdorp, Bloemhof, Kimberley, Britstown, Beaufort West, Laingsburg and Worcester.

While at The Table Bay, the cyclists handed over a total of R160 000.00 to five deserving local charities. They are Friends of Valkenberg Trust, which works with hospital staff at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital to promote the recovery of people with serious mental illnesses; O.W.L Haven Shelter, which provides shelter and rehabilitation services for homeless people in Cape Town; Children ‘a Loud, which runs several programmes for the youth; Peace Haven Senior Citizen Service Centre, which provides food, medicine and other support services for destitute elderly people in Belville and CASPO which provides food and other interventions for people living on the streets of Belville.

As nonprofit organizations, they all rely heavily on the donations and support they receive from the corporate sector and members of the public.

“The Table Bay is pleased to be part of the 17th annual Sun City to The Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour, to play host to the brave cyclists and see deserving local charities benefitting from their tremendous effort,” says Joanne Selby, General Manager at The Table Bay.

Over the past 16 years, the Sun City to The Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour has donated approximately R9.5 million to various charity organisations supported by the four Sun International properties en route, namely Sun City (North West), Flamingo Casino (Kimberley), Golden Valley Casino (Worcester) and The Table Bay.

The Sun City to The Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour boasts a diverse mix of cyclists of all ages, and from different countries, including two cyclists from Austria. Three of the riders in the 2019 tour have taken part in the event for more than 10 years. Johann Mare, the Materials Manager at Sun City and Tour Organiser has participated in every Sun City to The Table Bay Charity Cycle Tour since its inception and once again made the journey on a tandem.

The cyclists encourage interested and committed individuals from all walks of life and various international countries to join the team with their fundraising effort. The team participated in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, as a Charity Bond Entry on 10 March 2019 before making their way back to Sun City.
