Durban based afro pop, hip pop, jazz / Rnb artist Naomi Ngcobo AKA ‘Miona‘, is best known for her collaborations with local afro pop and maskandi artists. Her energetic stage performance and futuristic-inspired wardrobe makes this girl stand out amongst the rest. With lush soundscapes, African beats and heartfelt choruses, Miona’s music draws influence from musicians such as Whitney Houston, Lira, Emily Sandre, Miriam Makeba, Kelly Khumalo, Demi Lovato and Labrinth. Growing up in a musical family, Miona began her journey in music by participating in school and church choirs.
Her school choir scooped the winning spot against provincial schools in 2011 while competing against other local choirs. When Miona was in grade 9, a family member introduced her to another artist named Clive who owned a band in Musgrave, Durban.
She began singing well-known cover songs with the band, which included Indian songs, American songs and South African songs. Miona continued travelling with the band around Durban and surrounding areas. She was in sync with the band in terms of melody, tempo and how they worked together as a live act. Miona left the band when she was 17 years old to concentrate on her schooling. After matric she decided to continue with music and began hosting her own successful events around KZN with fellow musical acquaintances.
Her love for music never faltered, and to date she has collaborated with musicians such as MusiholiQ, Mzukulu, Xowla, Zyamqhuksa, X-wise, Mduduzi Ncube, Celza, bab’Ntokozo zungu (guitarist) and many more. In a world of over-sexualised leading ladies and a drug-infected pop culture, Miona remains a role model to the youth, preaching individuality and self love.
Miona is currently working on her yet to be released EP titled “Ukhamba“, once again embracing and honoring her African roots with a modernized electro flow and at the same time showcasing her well known captivating RnB melodies that keep her audiences entranced. On the 14th of February Miona dropped ‘Abuya amathemba‘, a beautiful afro pop love song mixed with her signature African energy.
