Q&A with Stephen Gawking & Eva Morgan
Eva Morgan and Stephen Gawking on 'Bubblegum Milkshake', Music and Mission

Q&A with Stephen Gawking & Eva Morgan. – ‘Bubblegum Milkshake‘ is a deceptively bright pop single, immediate and singable yet layered with emotional depth and honesty. The record pairs Eva Morgan’s seasoned, expressive vocals with Ijay Swanepoel’s creative vision as Stephen Gawking, The Nuclear Lyricist. Produced by Bobby Johnson at Re-Birth Music, the track shines with radio-friendly polish and heartfelt purpose. In this interview, both artists reflect on the collaboration, the story behind the song, and their journeys through music and meaning.
Q (Stephen Gawking): You live with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 and are wheelchair-bound. How do you decide how much of that experience to weave into your art, and how has it shaped your mission as an ambassador of hope?
Stephen Gawking: I try to be as authentic as possible, if not in the art, then at least in the interviews. Living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 2 has always been my reality, so it naturally finds its way into what I create. But I never want it to be a victim narrative. It is about showing that strength is not about muscle; it is about faith, perseverance, and purpose. By the grace of the Lord Jesus, I have learned to turn pain into purpose and challenges into testimony. I try to live and create in a way that reminds people that hope is real, that no matter your circumstances, you can still dream, still make an impact, and still fight the good fight.
Q (Eva Morgan): You have an extensive background on stage and in studio. Which early experiences, from the Barnyard shows and SHINE4 to major festivals, shaped the performer you are today?
Eva Morgan: I have always been a natural performer, and challenges came easily to me. I learned so much from musicians I worked with from a young age, but it still comes with commitment and hard work.
Q (Stephen and Eva): Stephen, you first came up with the idea for ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’. What sparked the concept, and how did Eva become the perfect collaborator to bring it to life?
Stephen Gawking: The idea for ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ came from wanting to do something lighter, to have fun with pop music again, but still include meaning underneath. It started as a playful phrase that stuck in my head, almost like a joke at first, but the more I thought about it, the more it reflected how we sometimes hide depth behind fun and sweetness. When Eva came on board, everything clicked. She is a naturally gifted artist with the full package. Her voice, presence, and energy captured exactly what the song needed: that balance between fun and feeling. She brought warmth and confidence that turned the concept into something alive and cinematic.
Eva Morgan: I was lucky to have been asked to record the song by Bobby from Re-Birth Music, as he felt my voice and style were perfectly suited for it.
Q (Stephen Gawking): ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ plays with sugary imagery while holding a deeper emotional current. What inspired that contrast, and what do you hope listeners discover beneath the surface?
Stephen Gawking: The contrast came from real life. So much of the world today is about the highlight reel. Everything looks glossy and sweet on the outside, but underneath, people are struggling or searching for meaning. ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ uses sugary imagery to reflect how easy it is to get caught up in the surface-level things and miss what really matters. I wanted the song to feel fun and carefree but also leave a small spark for those listening closely, a reminder that there is always something real beneath the noise. For me, that truth comes from faith and purpose, but I think everyone can relate to wanting something deeper than the bubblegum on top.
Q (Eva Morgan): How did you approach your vocal performance to balance the song’s playful energy with its softer, more introspective moments?
Eva Morgan: When I listen to the words and feel the music, my voice naturally fills the song with emotion to portray its meaning. It is a beautiful and deep song, and I felt that while recording.
Q (Stephen and Eva): Did the song’s concept evolve during the studio process, or was the final version close to your initial vision?
Stephen Gawking: The core idea stayed the same from the start, that playful contrast between sweetness and something deeper, but it definitely evolved in the studio. Once Bobby Johnson started building the track, it took on a bigger, cinematic energy. It began as a simple pop idea, but the production gave it more emotion and atmosphere. By the time Eva recorded her vocals, everything came together. Her performance captured that perfect blend of light and depth.
Eva Morgan: Just as Stephen mentioned. I got creative with the melody and vocal lines that we recorded with Bobby in studio.
Q (Stephen Gawking): You co-produced the track with Bobby Johnson. How did your collaboration shape the arrangement, sound, and feel of the final mix?
Stephen Gawking: Working with Bobby is a balance between emotion and precision. I usually bring the story and vision, and he translates it into sound with incredible attention to detail. On ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’, we worked seamlessly from start to finish. Eva also contributed valuable ideas that shaped the final mix. It was a true collaboration where everyone’s instincts aligned, and we ended up with something balanced, powerful, and true to the heart of the song.
Q (Eva Morgan): Can you share a memorable studio moment with Bobby or Stephen that changed the direction or emotion of the song in a positive way?
Eva Morgan: Yes. Bobby and I ran through the song before I went into the vocal booth. On the first try, I did not even get to the second verse because he was so excited about the way I sang it. He kept talking and walking around the studio. He did that about three times. It made me feel appreciated and excited to start recording.
Q (Stephen and Eva): What creative or production choices did you make to capture both the glossy pop surface and the emotional layers beneath it?
Stephen Gawking: It was all about contrast and balance. We used bright, catchy melodies and playful production elements to draw listeners in but layered them with lyrics and vocal delivery that carried real emotion. Working with Bobby Johnson, we made deliberate choices in arrangement, tone, and dynamics to make the song feel epic but fun, so it entertains on the surface while resonating more deeply for those who listen closely.
Eva Morgan: I played around with different lines and small vocal runs to complement the already catchy song.
Q (Stephen Gawking): Your music often explores themes of resilience, hope, and human connection. Where does ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ fit within your catalogue, and what makes it different from your previous releases?
Stephen Gawking: ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ fits within my catalogue as another exploration of resilience, hope, and human connection, but it approaches those themes in a lighter, more playful way. Some of my previous releases lean heavily on emotional depth or storytelling, while this one has a glossy, sugary surface that makes it instantly fun and catchy. At the same time, it still carries emotional layers, a little whimsical and cinematic, and a reminder that music can be uplifting and meaningful.
Q (Eva Morgan): You have performed on major stages and released acclaimed recordings. How did this collaboration challenge or inspire you differently from past projects?
Eva Morgan: Every recording experience differs from studio to studio and depends on how producers work with the artist. Bobby and I clicked immediately, and it felt like I had known him for a very long time, even though I had just met him earlier that day. It made the experience special, and that energy spills into the work we did in studio.
Q (Stephen Gawking): Moving to Ballito marked a new chapter in your journey. How has finding a sense of peace and accessibility in your surroundings shaped your mindset as an artist and as someone navigating life with Spinal Muscular Atrophy?
Stephen Gawking: Moving to Ballito marked a new chapter in my life. Finding peace and accessibility in my surroundings has been life changing. Everything is closer here. Even if I do not go out much, it is comforting to know that doctors, caregivers, and essential services are nearby. The calm coastal environment gives me space to focus creatively, and having a place that accommodates my physical needs allows me to invest fully in my music and projects. By the grace of the Lord Jesus, it has strengthened my mindset of gratitude, resilience, and intentionality.
Q (Stephen and Eva): How do you hope ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ will resonate with listeners who simply enjoy it as a pop song compared with those seeking something more meaningful beneath the melody?
Stephen Gawking: I wanted the song to work on multiple levels. For listeners who enjoy a fun, catchy pop song, it is bright, playful, and easy to sing along to. But for those who listen deeper, there are emotional layers about resilience, hope, and connection. If it helps someone escape for a few minutes or feel a bit better, then it has done its job.
Eva Morgan: I agree with Stephen. ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ caught my attention the first time the demo was sent to me. I loved it instantly. I loved the meaning behind it, and I could relate to the lyrics while still enjoying the fun, carefree energy.
Q (Stephen and Eva): In your view, what role can mainstream pop play in promoting conversations around inclusion, empathy, and diversity in the music industry?
Stephen Gawking: Mainstream pop has a huge reach, which gives it the power to shape conversations and influence culture. Pop is popular because it is not too heavy, people enjoy it to escape the stress of life. At the same time, pop can still be inclusive and tell meaningful stories. Representation matters. Showing that artists of different abilities, backgrounds, and experiences belong in the industry can inspire others and build a more compassionate audience.
Eva Morgan: There is nothing better than hearing your favourite song on the radio or television, whether you are in a good mood or need a pick-me-up. You turn up the volume and let it take you where you need to be. Music helps you feel understood with no judgement.
Q (Stephen and Eva): With the release set for 21 November, what aspects of the launch are you most excited about?
Stephen Gawking: I am excited to finally share ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ with the world. There is always a special thrill in releasing something you have poured your heart into. Seeing how people connect with it, whether through the fun pop energy or the deeper layers, is incredibly rewarding. I am also looking forward to collaborating with fans and creators as the song starts its journey.
Eva Morgan: I am excited to hear the response from friends and family. I will also be excited for Stephen for writing such a great track. We will be celebrating, and I will be performing it live on stage to help promote it.
Q (Stephen Gawking): What practical support or partnerships have helped you share your music with a wider audience? How can communities support artists with accessibility needs?
Stephen Gawking: Practical support from people like Devo, who is a one-man powerhouse, has been invaluable, along with Bobby Johnson, my family, and close friends. Their effort and belief in my vision make it possible to share my music more widely. Communities can support artists with accessibility needs by being mindful. Ensuring venues and platforms are inclusive, and by listening, sharing, and connecting. Every bit of support helps.
Q (Stephen Gawking): Describe your songwriting ritual. How does an idea become a finished song, and when are you most creative?
Stephen Gawking: My songwriting ritual has evolved. I used to use a gummy for medicinal purposes to force ideas, but now I let concepts come naturally. If it is a good idea, it stays in your mind without being forced. I start by letting the concept simmer until the emotion is clear, then work with Bobby Johnson to bring it to life. I am a late-night writer. That is when ideas flow best. The process is about patience, authenticity, and making sure the story comes through.
Q (Eva Morgan): How do you prepare for a vocal session when a song calls for both confidence and emotional depth?
Eva Morgan: For confidence, I learn the melody and lyrics until they become second nature. Then I can enjoy singing comfortably and be my authentic self. That is when emotion and passion carry the song. Performing it becomes the finished product for both the artist and the audience.
Q (Stephen and Eva): What unexpected source of inspiration shaped this song in a way listeners might not guess?
Stephen Gawking: The most unexpected moment was deciding to bring in a female vocalist. The original idea was for a male voice, but I was inspired by the idea of a Pink-style vocal. To give the song a different energy. That led us to Eva Morgan, and it turned out to be the perfect decision.
Eva Morgan: Thank you, Stephen, for the opportunity. I knew it was going to be a special experience, and I feel blessed to have been asked to record ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’.
Q (Stephen Gawking): Looking ahead, what are your creative goals for the next year, musically and in your advocacy work?
Stephen Gawking: My creative goal is to keep making music that inspires hope, tells stories, and connects with people. I want to explore new sounds and collaborate with talented artists. In advocacy, I want to continue raising awareness about accessibility and inclusion. By the grace of the Lord Jesus, I will keep sharing music, hope, and positivity wherever I can.
Q (Eva Morgan): What is next for your solo career following this collaboration? Are there any dream artists you would love to work with in the future?
Eva Morgan: Stephen and I will collaborate on a new piano-driven song soon. I will also be releasing my own new single after recording my Afrikaans debut album titled Ek Is. I am a huge fan of Karen Zoid, but I am open to working with any good artist. If we can make music, I am happy.
Q (Stephen and Eva): If ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ opens the door to another joint project, what would you love to explore?
Stephen Gawking: ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’ has already opened doors for more collaborations with Eva. We are working on our next song, titled Manna, and planning a candlelight remix of ‘Bubblegum Milkshake’. By the grace of the Lord Jesus, many more projects will follow. Eva is the real deal, the full package, and collaborating with her is something I am excited to keep exploring.
Eva Morgan: Yes, I am very excited to hear what Stephen is creating with Manna and how he is going to work his magic with the new single. Thank you so much, Stephen, for your kind words.
