
Uber Empowers Townships To Generate R1 Billion – Through a strategic partnership, Uber Eats, in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, has successfully enabled township businesses across the province to generate more than R1 billion in revenue through food delivery since its launch in 2023.This initiative supports the Township Development Act by connecting local entrepreneurs to the digital economy and helping them reach more customers.
They celebrated the R1 billion revenue milestone on Tuesday, 03 February 2026, at Streat and Chill in Soweto.
The event began with a powerful performance of the National Anthem by 17-year-old Soweto resident Crush. This was followed by an energetic dance from the Soweto Dance Troop.
Ntsoaki Nsibanyoni, General Manager of Uber Eats Sub-Saharan Africa, was the first speaker. She shared that Uber Eats had invested over R250 million in tools and training. This, to help township food businesses join the platform and offer delivery.
Saskia De Jongh, Vice President of Uber Eats EMEA, travelled from Amsterdam to attend the event and reaffirmed Uber Eats’ continued commitment to supporting economic growth in South African townships. De Jongh highlighted that township economies have long been vibrant and full of potential. She explained further that Uber’s role is to help expand and accelerate these existing strengths through better access to technology.
Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Honourable Lebogang Maile, spoke about the need for sustainable growth in townships. Encouraging young people to start businesses to tackle the high unemployment in South Africa.
During the event, a short video was also played. This showcased real success stories from South Africans who had received delivery bicycles and training. This demonstrated how Uber’s resources helped them expand their businesses and increase their earnings.
“Township businesses deserve strong support”
Michelle Constant, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, noted that 500 American companies operate in the country. She emphasized that township businesses deserve the same strong support.
The event closed with the presentation of well-deserved awards to outstanding merchants and courier drivers. Honouring their vital role in driving this successful partnership and its positive impact on township communities
