More about the “From Nowhere to Now-Here” project

From Nowhere to Now-Here” engages in a continuous dialogue with live performers, allowing the audience to witness the evolution of sound during each concert. The project challenges preconceived notions of cultural identity by searching for a sound free from cultural appropriation or connotations linked to one’s cultural environment.

This project is not a one-time performance. It’s a journey that has been growing since my first Pro Helvetia application” says Miron Andres. The project delves into a personal yet universally resonant topic, prompting audiences to question similar aspects of their identity. The release of Miron’s compositions in October 2022 by the French record label albus-editions, based on work during his Johannesburg residency, affirmed the project’s potential for growth.

The sound installation serves as a premiere for the larger project “From Nowhere to Nowhere,” with more installations and evolutions in planning. Miron envisions “From Nowhere to Nowhere” becoming a cornerstone of his career, building on the unique history and creative atmosphere of Johannesburg. The city’s openness to diverse heritage adds a distinctive perspective to the project.

“Having the premiere of this installation in Johannesburg is especially important to me. I have rarely encountered such a flourishing and versatile breeding ground of creativity as in Johannesburg. Its unique history sheds a different perspective on my project.

However, paradoxically, I have rarely been confronted with such openness regarding my own heritage.

This sound installation is the next logical step in this research, an important building block that will pave the way for the project’s continued exploration.” – Miron Andres

The project features a diverse group of musicians and collaborators, including Miron Andres, Jill Richards, Cara Stacey, Barend Engelbrecht, and Jurgen Meekel. Each brings a unique perspective and musical background to contribute to the experiment.
