Farah Audhali Comments on her music

My love of music developed at an early age. Mum was a singer/songwriter and keyboardist in a few bands back in the 80’s. My father always made a point of playing music and exposing us to his favourite artists. Therefore, growing up in a musical household, my passion for singing and songwriting was always something that was nurtured and encouraged.

In spite of this, I always lacked confidence in my ability to sing. Often embarrassed and uncomfortable when singing in front of others. This is something I still struggle with today. Feeling exposed and on show for the world to see and judge just really causes my anxiety levels to spike! So, from the comfort of my own room, making music and uploading videos on Instagram has allowed me to protect the purity that surrounds music and conserve it’s capacity to heal me.

As I got older, listening to music became a form of escapism for me. I love the ability a song has of teleporting you back in time to a moment or a feeling. Sometimes helping to create a new experience altogether. Writing on the other hand I often use as a healing tool. Releasing words of pain and sadness when in a negative space and expressing words of gratitude and contentment when in a positive one.

Some of my influences include artists such as D’angelo, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott and many others. A lot of my main influences can be found within the same genre. I find myself always experimenting with a wide range of musical arrangements and vocal techniques. I don’t like the idea of limiting myself to one sound and really enjoy exploring new styles.
