The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra Releases Dedicated YouTube Video on Instruments of the Orchestra

The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra has made a one-hour long video on the instruments of the orchestra for the use of schools countrywide.

CEO of the CPO Louis Heyneman says that for years the CPO has presented concerts at schools and in communities across greater Cape Town and the Boland to introduce learners to the magic of a symphony orchestra.

We were reaching some 20 000  young people each year. The pandemic put an immediate hold on those schools visits.  In seeking ways to connect with our audiences, many of whom were missing live concerts, we went online – we were streamed in festivals, we presented a community gala and many more concerts.

With the support of the City of Cape Town, we decided to produce a dedicated video which incorporates elements from the concerts we had tested over many years, (sadly without the participation of young learners conducting!) and have made it available for all who have access to the internet.  Those schools who do not will receive DVDs of the introduction to the instruments of the orchestra.”

Brandon Phillips, the CPO’s resident conductor, and host Marvin Weavers, the CPO’s youth development and education co-ordinator, were the lynchpins in the project, which was recorded at Parklands College, a supporter of the CPO which donated use of its venue.  Weavers introduced each family of instruments, which were then demonstrated by the CPO’s musicians starting with the loudest, the brass, and then the woodwinds, percussion and strings.

The musicians individually demonstrate the range of each instrument, the sections showed what they sounds like, building up to an orchestral crescendo and ending with the National Anthem.  The music was designed to attract young people, with film and theatre music such as Entry of The Gladiators, Rocky and the Lion King to soccer themes and the overture from District Six, the Musical.  It was produced by CameraReady and Emdon Videos.
