Introducing Cape Town’s nu-disco pop band ‘Year of Dogs’ and their debut single ‘Sweet Red’

Cape Town-based nu-disco pop band, Year of Dogs, released their debut single “Sweet Red” on all major platforms on 15 January 2021. Fresh onto the indie scene, the song is the first of several tracks to be released over the course of the year.
“Sweet Red” was recorded at the home studio of Josh Berry, of HONEYMOAN fame and a resident producer in the local industry.
Written during the height of the recent lockdown, the track is an ode to the obscurities of 2020 to a time when most of us were hopelessly glued to our cell phones; when social media was one of the only means to connect with those closest to us and one of our only escapes from the mundanity of house-bound living.
‘Sweet Red‘ is a treatise on digital migration that reflects the duality of an online lifestyle, taking the listener on a quest for connection and ventures into the perils and confusions of an increasingly digital world.
The song begins cheerfully, a metaphor for the short-lived fulfillment social media provides when engaging with friends and followers. But as the song progresses, it grows ever more somber and tumultuous as the realisation sinks in, that virtual engagement is not sufficient to satisfy the innate human need for real life connection.
