From Joburg’s Iconic Market Theatre to the World
NYO Jazz’s Powerful 'Live in Johannesburg' Album is Here

From Joburg’s Iconic Market Theatre to the World – In a powerful convergence of history, heritage, and harmony, NYO Jazz (the United States’ national youth jazz orchestra) under the direction of acclaimed trumpeter Sean Jones, has released its first live album. The album is titled Live in Johannesburg.
Recorded during a four-concert residency at the iconic Market Theatre. The album captures the electrifying performances of 22 of America’s most gifted young jazz musicians. (ages 16–19) A rare cross-cultural exchange with leading South African talents.
What makes this release even more significant for South African audiences is the proud endorsement from national treasure Dr. John Kani. His name graces the very stage on which the album was recorded. After witnessing NYO Jazz’s performance live, Dr. Kani offered heartfelt praise.
“The young people have spoken, and we have heard the truth tonight. I truly believe your voices are needed now more than ever before. I am excited to join you in this wonderful celebration of art, life, humanity, and the celebration of freedom.”
The album is a cultural time capsule. It blends classic American big band jazz with the soul of South African musical tradition. It features compositions by celebrated composers such as Billy Childs, Lakecia Benjamin, and Angela Bofill. This, alongside a Carnegie Hall-commissioned work titled “Isigqi Suite” by renowned South African jazz composer Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane. South African musicians Romy Brauteseth and Linda Sikhakhane also feature prominently, adding local texture to a globally resonant sound.
NYO Jazz Album Live recording at The Market Theatre
The live recording took place at The Market Theatre, one of South Africa’s most iconic cultural institutions.— The Theatre is known globally for its role in the resistance arts during apartheid. The venue, and specifically the John Kani Theatre, remains a symbol of creative freedom and resilience. For the young NYO Jazz performers, many of whom had never visited the continent before, the experience was both musically and spiritually transformative.
“The soul of Johannesburg infused the young musicians with a hope and understanding of struggle. They became more alive through human exchange and understanding. Creating performances that exude the magic of connection.” ~ Artistic Director Sean Jones
NYO Jazz Album produced under the banner of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute
This milestone album was produced under the banner of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. The institute is one of the most revered cultural institutions in the world. Each July, NYO Jazz brings together the top teen jazz musicians from across the U.S. following a highly competitive audition process. Participants are mentored by some of the world’s leading jazz artists and tour internationally as cultural ambassadors, using the universal language of jazz to connect with communities worldwide.
For South Africa, Live in Johannesburg serves as a new chapter in the Market Theatre’s historic discography. It joins the legacies of legends like Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Sibongile Khumalo, and Jabu Khanyile. Their live albums once echoed through the same space. Now available globally, Live in Johannesburg is more than just an album! This is a celebration of youth, legacy, unity, and the enduring power of jazz.
