Jazz Queen Talie Monin launches special edition Heritage Month playlist on Spotify showcasing some of SA’s finest musical talent

SA’s multi-award winning Jazz star Talie Monin has launched a special edition Heritage Month playlist on Spotify. Showcasing some of South Africa’s finest musical talent, the playlist pays respect to the icons of local jazz. Names on the list include Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makena, Dorothy Masuka, Abdullah Ibrahim, Sibongile Khumalo and many others.
“Curating this list was intimidating, and a delight, all rolled into one!” says Monin. “These artists are icons, they are the benchmark of South African jazz and they inspired me to chase my dreams. I can’t think of a better musical tribute for Heritage Day”.

A standout vocalist since her earliest days growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa, Talie Monin, (Nqobile Mchunu in her native Zulu) won numerous local singing contests and was deeply inspired by the contemporary jazz music her parents, aunts and uncles surrounded her with.
In her 20s, Talie moved to Paris to further her jazz vocal training at the American School of Modern Music. Eventually making her way to Hong Kong, Talie became an immediate hit with Asian audiences due to her unique delivery and vast knowledge of the standard jazz repertoire.
In 2017, Talie Monin performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival and won the ‘Audience Choice Award’ She was invited back the following year to open for Chick Corea.
More recently Talie Monin gave a sensational command performance at the Nelson 100th Centenary Celebrations held in Beijing, China. She also headlined at the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival.
In 2019 she won Best Female Jazz Artist at the Mzantsi Jazz Awards. At the same awards ceremony, her debut album 24 Strathay was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Album and her single Thula Mtwana was nominated for Best Jazz Song. She has selected her cover of ‘Thula Mntwana’, available on the album, to be added to her Heritage Month playlist on Spotify.
