Exploring Sheron’s Soundscape
Insights from the South African Alt-Rock Veteran on His New Release ‘Glow’
SA Music News Magazine is excited to present an in-depth discussion with Sheron Sibert. Sheron is a talented musician whose career spans over three decades in the South African music scene. Known for his work with bands like X-Over and collaborations with many renowned artists, he now performs solo. His latest single and lyric video ‘Glow’ will be available on 25 October.
In this engaging interview, we explore Sheron’s extensive musical journey while diving into his creative process. We uncover the inspiration behind his new release, and get to know the man behind the music…
Q: Sheron, your career has spanned over three decades, and you’ve worn many hats in the music industry. Can you share how your experiences as a producer and sound engineer have influenced your work as a performer?
Sheron: I have been fortunate to understand the dynamics of every instrument and how they can blend on stage, both sonically and musically. This early understanding has been immensely beneficial when sharing the stage with other musicians. It has taught me the importance of giving space when needed and standing out only when asked. Many musicians, especially early in their careers, often don’t grasp this concept. I’ve experienced this myself.
Q: With your extensive background in both live performances and studio recordings, what do you find most fulfilling about each aspect of your musical career?
Sheron: It’s challenging to pinpoint just one or two aspects. Everything blends into a rich musical language filled with diverse dialects. I take great comfort in being adaptable across genres. This allows me to navigate various situations without overthinking. Ultimately, I strive to enjoy the ride and have fun.
Q: As a versatile musician who plays multiple instruments, how do you approach songwriting differently when working on your own music versus collaborating with other artists?
Sheron: Writing alone can be challenging. Still, collaborating with other musicians can present its own difficulties, as differing ideas may sometimes clash. While I enjoy both processes, I generally prefer collaboration.
However, when collaboration isn’t feasible, I’ve learned to create alone. This has led to discovering facets of myself I didn’t know existed. Although I have a clear vision in my mind regarding a song’s different parts and arrangements, working with others can be exciting. Often, collaborators present fantastic ideas. Pushing each other toward ever more creative outcomes.
Q: Your single ‘Glow’ has a unique sound that blends indie and alternative rhythms. What were some of your primary influences while creating this track, and how did you want it to resonate with listeners?
Sheron: To be honest, when I produce songs (whether for myself or others), I don’t overthink it. Ideas tend to flow naturally. I try to capture them quickly, so they don’t fade away. This song emerged similarly. It came together effortlessly as I allowed the music to flow out of me.
Q: You’ve worked with various artists throughout your career. Is there a particular collaboration that stands out as a favourite, and what made it memorable for you?
Sheron: I would do a disservice to my collaborators if I only named a few. I am grateful for every opportunity, whether with well-known artists or emerging talent. Working with prominent figures offers invaluable lessons. I’ve learned just as much from lesser-known artists. I apologise if that doesn’t directly answer your question.
Q: Can you share your experience of self-recording and producing ‘Glow’? What was the creative environment like? How did it influence the final sound of the single?
Sheron: The process began with a conversation about partying and later performing on stage, ensuring the audience had a great time. While holding my acoustic guitar, I experimented with ideas. I recorded them to ensure I didn’t miss anything I might like later. The lyrics and musical ideas organically came together during this process.
Q: Live shows have always been a significant part of your career. How do you connect with your audience during performances, and what do you think makes a live experience unforgettable?
Sheron: I strive to read each room. In some gigs, the audience may not feel inclined to connect, making my job a bit harder. I try different songs and observe the audience’s reactions. Ultimately, people want to be entertained. I aim to connect with them and provide a memorable experience.
Q: Besides music, what are some of your other passions or hobbies that inspire your creative process or provide balance in your life?
Sheron: I have dedicated my entire life to music, which shapes my daily activities. I enjoy the outdoors, nature, boating, and a bit of aviation, although I don’t take that too seriously. I also love spending time with my cats and watching a good series or a funny movie.
Q: If you could perform a duet with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why? What would you want to sing together?
Sheron: This is a tough question. There are so many artists I would love to connect with. Locally, Mark Beling, a good friend and a significant inspiration to me, stands out. On an international level, the list is long. I would mention Sting, Prince, Mark Knopfler, and David Gilmour. I would consider it a tremendous honour to perform one of my songs after one of theirs!
Q: Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for your solo career following the release of ‘Glow’? Can fans expect more new music or perhaps a tour soon?
Sheron: A tour would be fantastic, although I believe it’s still a bit early for that. I have other songs available on various music platforms. Perhaps not enough yet, but I’m constantly working on new material and reviving old recordings and demos. I have recently begun a project with my son. He is into hip-hop, and we just finished our first hybrid track. I am thoroughly enjoying this collaboration and the bonding experience it provides through music.
