Rewind Speak on Single and Video ‘Never Enough’
Unpacking Influences and the Creative Processes...
Rewind Speak on Single and Video ‘Never Enough’ – Cape Town’s rising pop-rock band Rewind is ready to make their mark with the release of their single and video ‘Never Enough’. In this interview with SA Music News Magazine, the band opens about their creative journey, their influences, and what fans can expect from them.
Q: Rewind has transitioned from performing covers to creating your own original pop-rock music. How did you discover and develop your musical identity as a band? Were there any defining moments or experiences that helped shape your sound?
Rewind: Our musical identity developed through the many covers we played throughout the band’s journey. We realised that everyone in the band shared a common taste for 80s and 90s rock. A defining moment was when we noticed that our fans enjoyed old-school rock as much as we did. From that point, we decided to create our first rock-pop single.
Q: Rewind began during your high school days at Edgemead, where your shared passion for rock brought you together. Can you share a standout memory from those early days that solidified your decision, as close friends, to pursue music as a career?
Rewind: The memory that stands out is our first show at the bowling club in Edgemead. It was an overwhelming experience for everyone in the band. Some members had experience playing at shows and competitions in high school, but none of those came close to the experience of our first real gig.
Q: Every band member brings something different to the table. How do your individual influences and strengths complement each other when writing or performing?
Rewind: Each band member is unique in their playing style, performance, and musical taste. Jordan shows passion through his voice and has a rockstar attitude on stage. Aiden enjoys experimenting with offbeat fills and innovative drum techniques. John brings dynamic guitar solos and often performs wild moves, like playing behind his head. Simon’s energy on stage is contagious; he sometimes jumps with his keyboard in front of him. Davin is the backbone, keeping time with the drummer and filling the space when the others are showing off their technical skills.
Q: ‘Never Enough’ is your first original release, which is a big step for any band. What did you learn about yourselves during the writing and recording process of this single?
Rewind: We learned how similar our musical tastes are when it comes to blending rock instrumentation with pop elements in the vocals. We also discovered how adaptable we are as a band. If an issue arises during a show or in the studio, we’re quick to find solutions, often making it seem as if there was never a problem to begin with.
Q: Rewind blends elements of modern rock and pop into your music. Who are some of your musical influences, and how do they inspire the way you approach songwriting and production?
Rewind: Bands like Billy Idol, Bon Jovi, and other rock legends are major influences for us. We aim to create music that either reignites or preserves the rock genre for future generations. The Stopforth brothers’ father played in a band called Magnum 4, and he was a huge inspiration to them. Carrying on their father’s musical legacy in their own style through Rewind has always been a key motivation.
Q: The South African music scene is diverse and constantly evolving. How do you see yourselves fitting into this landscape, and how does being a South African band influence your approach to music?
Rewind: There are very few rock and pop bands in South Africa, and not many people in the country are into this genre. Our goal is to attract the South African fans who do love rock and pop, and eventually branch out to other countries with similar musical tastes.
Q: With the music video for ‘Never Enough’ set to release alongside the single, what was the vision behind the visuals, and how does it tie into the song’s themes of heartbreak and healing?
Rewind: The video features a lot of dramatic visuals and a large venue. The dramatic elements, like sparks and smoke, symbolise the emotional intensity built up inside. The big venue represents the hollow feeling left after a breakup. The rock tone of the song expresses the release of pain during the performance.
Q: 2024 brought the addition of Simon Jasper to the band. How has Simon’s arrival influenced your dynamic, both creatively and personally?
Rewind: Simon brought a lot of creativity to the band, helping us secure more shows, venues, clients, and opportunities. He’s quick to act, and much has happened since he joined us in mid-2024. Personally, he’s become the joker of the band, always cracking jokes and keeping things light hearted. Whether at shows or band practice, he brings a lot of fun to the group.
Q: Fans are eagerly awaiting your next steps. Can you give us a sneak peek of what’s in store for Rewind after the release of ‘Never Enough’? What are your dreams for the band’s future?
Rewind: We have plans to release more singles, and maybe even a full album in the future. As for the band’s dreams, some of us aspire to go international, while others are just enjoying the ride and seeing where it takes us.
With their eyes set on the future and a growing fanbase, Rewind is ready to take on the world one song at a time. Keep an ear out for more from this exciting Cape Town band as they continue their journey in the music industry.
