Written back in 2012 when she was just 17, the song reflects the innocent, dreamlike ideas of love that a young girl once held. It captures a moment in time, a fairytale version of romance imagined by someone who was still figuring out what love could be.
This journey began when Amancia first stepped into DJ Ikz’s studio, where she met Reuben, another vocalist. Her passion for music sparked that day as she quickly wrote ‘Breathing in Water’ over the beat in just one hour. The song remained close to her heart for 12 years before she decided it was the perfect track to launch her professional career.

The single tells the story of a girl whose love life is as unattainable as breathing underwater. “It was a metaphor for how impossible love felt for me at that age,” Amancia explains. The song’s structure is unique in it’s approach. Alternating verses between male and female perspectives. Creating an idealized courtship that played out in her mind.

Amancia worked closely with producer Luca Dimoon on the final version of the single who brought her new vision to life while staying true to the original lyrics and adding soulful, captivating melodies to give the song its rich, emotive feel. A self-described “poet at heart,” she has been writing since she was 13. Her songs reflect her vulnerability and authenticity. Every song, like ‘Breathing in Water,’ is crafted to evoke emotions and paint a picture, allowing the audience to step into her world.
While this single marks Amancia’s official debut, music has been her constant companion. Growing up in South Africa, Amancia started singing in church at just three years old. She formed a group with her cousins and sisters called ‘Acapella Vivid Souls’.
Over the years, she graced various stages, but she is now ready to explore her own journey.
