Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra present ‘Cyber Symphonies’ – Streaming Concerts for your listening pleasure available from 3rd & 12 December

Founded in 1914, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in Cape Town is arguably the most versatile and active orchestra on the continent of Africa, contributing handsomely to Cape Town’s global status and appeal the CPO is financially and culturally sustainable, attracting some of the leading international artists of our time.
A multi-functional orchestra, the CPO delivers a world-class orchestra service to all communities in the region, participating in festivals and concerts across all genres of music.
After a successful foray into recording and streaming chamber music concerts, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra is delighted to present the first two Cyber Symphonies, concerts which were recorded at Artscape in November for streaming on December 3rd and 12th.
Each will be available for four days on the Quicket platform. Principal guest conductor Bernhard Gueller is on the podium for both concerts.
On December 3rd, at the annual Huberte Rupert Memorial Concert, you can hear Peter Martens in the Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, as well as Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 in B flat, D 485.
Mrs Rupert, a great philanthropist, was committed to the arts and her legacy remains in the Rupert Music Foundation, which has sponsored this concert.
The concert is also being dedicated to Alexander Buzlov, the extraordinary Russian cellist who died in Moscow recently at the age of 37.
Principal guest conductor Bernhard Gueller is also conductor laureate of Symphony Nova Scotia where he was music director for 16 years. He has conducted major international orchestras, where he has been acclaimed for the mastery and magic he brings to podium. Peter Martens, principal cello, one of South Africa’s leading cellists, is acclaimed internationally through CDs and performances.
The second concert Line-up, from December 12 to 16, features an all-Mozart programme, with the overture to Cosi fan tutte and the Symphony No. 39 in E flat, K 543, , with pianists François du Toit performing the Mozart Concerto for Two Pianos. Two of South Africa’s favourite pianists, François du Toit and Albie van Schalkwyk, are collaborating on this concerto in which the writing for two pianos is evenly spread.
Both are revered soloists and accompanists, and widely respected teachers.Van Schalkwyk recently retired from UCT, where Du Toit continues to teach.
