Review of ‘The Chaos Chronicles Vol. II & III’

By: Summer-Raine Thesner

Review of ‘The Chaos Chronicles Vol. II & III’ – Alright, full disclosure! Thrash metal isn’t usually my comfort zone. I’m more likely to be found sipping coffee to amapiano beats than headbanging in a mosh pit. But every now and then, something loud and aggressively alive crosses my path and respect must be paid. Enter: The Chaos Chronicles Vol. II & III. The new double EP from South African thrash metal band, Chaos Doctrine.

The entire double EP is a steel-toed Dr Marten to the chest, in the best way possible.

Vol. II (Tracks 1–11) is a high-octane revamp of fan favourites. We’re talking industrial-strength remixes, guest features that hit like a crowbar, remastered classics, and even a live set that captures their raw on-stage energy. There’s also a South African homage to Black Sabbath, and it’s not just another cover.  You can feel the love and the bite all at once. It’s like Sabbath went on holiday to Jozi and came back with a scar and a story.

Standout? “Black Friday Bedlam (Industrial Remix) hits like a panic attack on a rollercoaster. Layers of mechanical grind and guttural power that somehow manage to be both chaotic and surgical. Not for the faint of heart, but definitely for the metalheads who crave precision in their noise.

Then there’s Vol. III (Tracks 12–20), which is like a time machine built out of barbed wire. It stitches together raw demos from as far back as 2014 with brand new 2025 heat. The contrast is wild. You can literally hear the band’s evolution over a decade. From rough-edged fury to more refined (but still feral) studio beasts. Fresh cuts like “The Rite (Verse II)” and “Bayonet (2024 Demo)” are absolute monsters. Heavy, unrelenting, and laced with just enough melody to keep you from being totally flattened.

Also, two iconic covers show up here, and while I won’t spoil the surprise, let’s just say they don’t just pay tribute, they grab the originals by the throat and make them thrash.

Is this album for everyone? Absolutely not!!! But for fans of heavy metal, industrial thrash, and sonic violence, it’s a feast. You’ll want to crank it so loud your neighbours start googling exorcists.

Even as someone outside the genre, I can’t deny the sheer commitment and force on display. Chaos Doctrine clearly didn’t come to play! If that’s your thing The Chaos Chronicles Vol. II & III is going to be your new personal apocalypse soundtrack.

Just maybe don’t listen to it before bed!
